Crooks Rob Cash Machines Via USB

The criminals managed to steal money from ATMs earlier this year, with sticks and exploits of Windows XP USB .
Researchers who spoke at the Chaos Communication Congress , organized by the Chaos Computer Club in Germany, said the attackers hit an undisclosed number of ATMs , cutting the chassis to reveal the USB slot.
Then load malicious software on the machine that meant they could withdraw cash through their own hidden menu , according to various reports.

The malware was created to attack a bank, but researchers who wished to remain anonymous , warned of a large number of financial institutions that still use the vulnerable software on their ATMs .
Apparently , the thieves were well-funded and sophisticated. One researcher suggested that an insider had to work for them. The malware had the ability to steal customer information , but did not.
"I'm not sure this is the final attack, or the end of the game ," said one of the researchers , according to Wired. " We'll probably see this type of malware in another bank in another city, on another continent. "
NSA can get at that from 8 miles away
Elsewhere on the Chaos Communication Congress , digital activist and security researcher Jacob Appelbaum said that he had seen documents that indicate the National Security Agency U.S. (NSA ) could cut in Wi -Fi connection 8 miles away . That was in 2007 too.
In Der Spiegel, Appelbaum had revealed information about the unit operations Tailored access the NSA , but went further in the CCC . The NSA has used drones to carry out such long-range attacks , he said, but could not provide any evidence to substantiate that claim.
" It tells us that they understand that common wireless cards are probably running Microsoft Windows , is an American company , they know about the vulnerabilities and kept secret to use them," Appelbaum said.
" This is part of an ongoing theme to sabotage and undermine American business and American ingenuity . "
